Le fotografie pubblicate in questo sito sono il risultato di sei lunghi viaggi che ho compiuto con Arturo Schwarz in India e nei paesi himalayani, Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal negli anni che vanno dal 1979 al 1983. Una gran parte di queste immagini è stata pubblicata in due volumi scritti da Schwarz di cui ho curato la parte fotografica: L’arte dell’amore in India e Nepal e Il culto della donna nella tradizione indiana, editi da Laterza nel 1980 e 1983. Molte fotografie, allora non utilizzate per mancanza di spazio sono ora presenti e rendono più completa la documentazione riguardante l’architettura e la scultura di genere religioso di questi paesi.
L’archivio fotografico presente nel sito si divide in due categorie: document e city. La prima comprende tutto il lavoro svolto per la realizzazione dei due volumi; qui si possono facilmente trovare le divinità e i templi Hindu dei luoghi più visitati e di quelli meno conosciuti del subcontinente indiano. La seconda guarda invece la città indiana come a una scena che si trasforma di continuo. Sono immagini che raccontano le grandi città come Calcutta, Bombay, New Delhi, Madras, Chandigarh, Simla e molte altre. E’ un lavoro che ho realizzato durante questi viaggi per un mio interesse personale di fotografo, pubblicato ora in una forma nuova: qui è la citta che si mostra nella vita di ogni giorno.
The photographs published on this website are the fruit of six long journeys I made with Arturo Schwarz in India and the Himalayan countries of Bhutan, Sikkim and Nepal in the years between 1979 and 1983. A large part of these pictures appeared in two books written by Schwarz, for which I took the photographs used as illustrations: L’arte dell’amore in India e Nepal and Il culto della donna nella tradizione indiana, published by Laterza in 1980 and 1983. Many other photographs, not utilized at the time for lack of space, can now be seen on the website, rendering its documentation of the religious architecture and sculpture of these countries more complete.
The complete photographic archive in the website is divided into two categories: document and city. The first includes all the work done for the realization of the two volumes; here you can easily find the Hindu gods and temples of the most visited places and those less known of the Indian subcontinent. The second one looks at the Indian city as a scene that is continuously transforming. These are images that tell the big cities like Calcutta, Bombay, New Delhi, Madras, Chandigarh, Simla and many others. It is a work that I made during these trips for my personal interest as a photographer, published now in a new form: here is the city that shows itself in the everyday life.
